Planning the structures as one coordinated package can improve architectural consistency, simplify procurement, reduce site conflicts and give owners or residents outdoor areas that are easier to use throughout the year.

Start Planning Before the Building Design Is Finalised

Unroofed pergolas

An unroofed pergola can define an outdoor space and support landscaping or shade elements, but it does not provide the same rain protection as a roofed system.

In New Zealand, an unroofed pergola is treated differently from a roofed veranda for building-consent purposes. Adding a roof can change the structure’s classification, so the proposed design should be checked early with the project architect, engineer and relevant authority.

Coordinate Structural Requirements

Each structure must be designed for its location, dimensions and expected environmental loads.

Important considerations may include:

  • Access to motors and control components
  • Gutter-cleaning access
  • Replacement of blinds or roof components

Health and safety risks are easier to manage when they are considered during the design process rather than after construction has begun. Whether an outdoor structure requires building consent can depend on its design, size, height, location, attachment method, use and accessibility.

New Zealand guidance provides some exemptions for certain porches and verandas, including specific situations involving structures up to 20 square metres and some structures between 20 and 30 square metres designed or supervised by appropriately qualified professionals. However, the exemptions contain conditions and may not apply where an area is accessible to the public or where other project circumstances fall outside the exemption.
