What to Consider When Preparing a Concrete Base for a Container Pool

Installing a container pool involves more than simply choosing a level area and pouring a concrete slab.

Once filled, a container pool carries a substantial amount of weight. Every cubic metre of water weighs approximately one tonne, before allowing for the pool structure, filtration equipment, people, decking and other connected features.

For that reason, the concrete base needs to be carefully planned and constructed for the selected pool and the specific conditions of the property.

Start With a Site-Specific Foundation Design

There is no single concrete slab design that will suit every container pool and every property.

The required slab thickness, concrete strength, reinforcing and foundation details may depend on:

  • The size and total filled weight of the pool
  • The pool’s structural loading points
  • The soil type and ground-bearing capacity
  • Whether the site contains natural, filled or disturbed ground
  • The slope and stability of the property
  • Seismic and liquefaction conditions
  • Nearby banks, retaining walls or excavations
  • Decks, stairs and other structures connected to the pool

Sites with poor, variable or liquefaction-prone ground may require a specifically engineered foundation rather than a standard concrete slab.

A suitably qualified local contractor or engineer should confirm the final design before construction begins.

Proper Ground Preparation Is Essential

A strong concrete slab can still fail if the ground beneath it has not been prepared correctly.

Before the concrete is poured, the site may need to be excavated to remove:

  • Topsoil
  • Vegetation
  • Organic material
  • Loose fill
  • Soft ground
  • Unsuitable or unstable material

A suitable compacted basecourse will normally be installed beneath the slab. This base material should be placed and compacted in controlled layers to reduce the risk of settlement.

Any soft areas should be identified and repaired before the concrete work begins.

The reinforcing must also be positioned correctly and supported so that it remains in the right place while the concrete is poured.

The Finished Base Must Be Flat and Level

The surface supporting the container pool should be flat, level and consistent in every direction.

It should be free from:

  • High points
  • Ridges
  • Steps
  • Significant depressions
  • Uneven transitions

A fall should not normally be built into the area directly supporting the pool unless the final pool or foundation drawings specifically require one.

An uneven concrete base can cause the pool to sit incorrectly and may create concentrated loading in certain areas. It can also make surrounding decking, stairs, covers and landscaping difficult to align.

The concrete contractor should laser-check or survey the completed slab before the pool is delivered.

Confirm the Correct Base Size and Position

The concrete base should be set out using the final drawings and dimensions for the selected pool.

Do not rely only on approximate shipping-container dimensions. A converted container pool may include structural components, filtration equipment, plumbing or finishes that extend beyond the main container body.

When positioning the slab, allow for:

  • The pool’s exact external dimensions
  • Required clearances
  • Steps and entry platforms
  • Filtration and pump equipment
  • Heat-pump equipment
  • Plumbing and electrical connections
  • Drainage
  • Pool fencing and safety barriers
  • Decking and landscaping
  • Future maintenance access
  • Truck and crane access

Planning these items early can prevent expensive alterations later.

Plan Drainage Before Pouring the Concrete

Water should not be allowed to collect around the pool or wash beneath the concrete base.

The site plan should consider:

  • Drainage around the slab perimeter
  • Falls in surrounding paving or landscaping
  • Pool overflow water
  • Backwash and maintenance water
  • Roof and deck runoff
  • Groundwater on low-lying sites
  • Drainage behind retaining walls
  • An appropriate water-discharge point

The concrete surface supporting the pool should normally remain level. Water should instead be directed away using the surrounding ground, paving or drainage system.

Chemically treated pool water should only be discharged using an appropriate method accepted by the relevant local authority.

Coordinate Plumbing and Electrical Services Early

The location of plumbing, electrical conduits and pool equipment should be confirmed before the slab is poured.

These services may include:

  • Pool suction and return lines
  • Water connections
  • Overflow pipes
  • Drainage lines
  • Electrical conduits
  • Pool lighting cables
  • Heat-pump connections
  • Equipment pads
  • Earthing or bonding requirements
  • Future inspection and maintenance access

Pipes, conduits and inspection points should not be placed beneath major structural loading areas unless they form part of the approved foundation design.

All electrical work should be completed by an appropriately qualified and licensed electrical contractor.

Check Underground Services and Easements

Before excavation begins, the client should identify any underground services or restrictions affecting the proposed pool location.

These may include:

  • Water pipes
  • Stormwater lines
  • Wastewater or sewer pipes
  • Electrical cables
  • Telecommunications
  • Gas services
  • Council-owned infrastructure
  • Easements
  • Septic tanks
  • Wastewater disposal fields
  • Manholes and inspection points

A pool and its foundation should not be positioned over underground infrastructure without approval from the relevant asset owner.

Property easements and access requirements should also be checked before confirming the pool location.

Allow Sufficient Time for the Concrete to Cure

A newly poured slab should not be loaded simply because the surface looks dry.

Concrete needs time to develop sufficient strength before the pool can be placed onto it.

The concrete contractor or engineer should confirm:

  • The required concrete strength
  • The reinforcing requirements
  • The curing method
  • The minimum period before loading
  • Whether testing or documentation is required

Pool delivery should only be arranged after the contractor or engineer has confirmed that the base is ready to carry the pool.

Plan Delivery and Crane Access

Container pools are generally delivered as complete or near-complete structures and lifted into position using a crane.

Before construction begins, check:

  • Truck access to the property
  • Driveway width and strength
  • Road width and turning space
  • Gates and fences
  • Trees and overhanging branches
  • Rooflines and other structures
  • Overhead power lines
  • Crane setup space
  • Crane outrigger locations
  • Ground stability
  • Lifting distance and height
  • Access over neighbouring properties
  • Traffic-management requirements

Restricted or complicated sites should be reviewed by the delivery or crane contractor before the installation date.

The pool slab should remain clear and accessible so that the pool can be safely lowered into position.

Check Council and Pool-Safety Requirements

The property owner should check the requirements of their local council before excavation or concrete work begins.

Approvals or inspections may relate to:

  • The swimming pool
  • The concrete foundation
  • Retaining walls
  • Decking and stairs
  • Drainage
  • Electrical work
  • Boundary setbacks
  • Planning or resource-consent requirements
  • Pool barriers and fencing

Residential pools must have suitable measures to restrict unsupervised access by young children.

Pool fencing, gates and barriers should be considered before the concrete base, decking and landscaping are completed.
