
Wind direction is one of the most overlooked factors when planning an outdoor cooking or entertaining area. It can affect how efficiently a pizza oven heats, where firepit smoke travels, whether barbecue burners remain lit and how comfortably guests can use the surrounding space.
A location that appears ideal on a calm day can become smoky, uncomfortable or potentially unsafe when the prevailing wind arrives. Understanding how air moves through the property should therefore be part of the planning process—not something considered only after the equipment has been installed.
Wind influences outdoor cooking in several ways:
Wind-driven embers are particularly important around dry vegetation, timber decks, pergolas and neighbouring properties. Fire and Emergency New Zealand notes that embers can be transported by wind and may collect in gutters, vegetation or other combustible areas.
The best layout is therefore not necessarily the most sheltered location. It is the position that manages wind without creating trapped smoke, unpredictable turbulence or excessive heat.
For many portable pizza ovens, the preferred arrangement is to have the wind approach the rear of the oven rather than blow directly into its opening.
This can help pull the flame towards the front of the cooking chamber. Wind blowing directly into the oven mouth may push the flame backwards, disturb combustion or extinguish the flame in some gas-fired models. Ooni recommends positioning compatible ovens so the wind reaches the back, while also advising caution during high winds.

A light, steady breeze may assist airflow through a wood-fired oven. Strong or gusting wind can make the fire harder to control and increase the chance of hot ash leaving the oven.

Firepits are usually more exposed than pizza ovens. Their smoke and embers can travel freely, making wind direction especially important.

The prevailing wind shown on a regional weather map may not match the airflow inside a particular backyard. Buildings, boundary fences and landscaping can redirect the wind or produce swirling zones.
Observe the property at the time the firepit is most likely to be used. Wind patterns during a summer evening may be different from those experienced during the middle of the day.
Wind can change unexpectedly. Seating should not be arranged so guests have no easy way to move if the smoke changes direction.
